Dear Travel Partners,

News has spread about the Novel Coronavirus, also known as the 2019-nCoV or the Wuhan Coronavirus. Originating in China, the CDC has recently announced a confirmed case in the United States. Below are some potential questions and answers intended to provide guidance on how an AIG Travel Insurance product may respond to this situation.

FAQS

1. I have travel booked to Wuhan, China, or to another location with confirmed cases of novel Coronavirus. I am afraid to travel due to the risk of contracting the illness. Does the Trip Cancellation benefit apply? No. The Trip Cancellation benefit provides coverage for specific listed reasons, such as illness or injury, weather conditions, traffic accidents and others. There is no coverage for fear of traveling to a specific destination, even for fear of illness. Please review your policy for more detailed information. The optional upgrade to Cancel for Any Reason coverage would however provide coverage because, as the name states, this coverage allows you to cancel for any reason.

2. If I am quarantined because of Coronavirus symptoms, would the Trip Interruption benefit apply? Most of our travel insurance plans do provide coverage if you are quarantined to an area, which prevents you from traveling or continuing on your trip. Please review your policy for more detailed information.

3. If I were to contract the Coronavirus prior to departure, would the Trip Cancellation benefit apply? Most of our travel insurance plans do provide coverage for an illness, which causes cancellation of travel, provided that the insurance policy was purchased prior to contracting the illness. Verification from your physician will be required in the event of a claim. Please review your policy for more detailed information.

4. If I were to contract the Coronavirus while on my trip, does my policy provide for medical expense benefits? If the disease was contracted during the trip, most plans, which include a Medical Expense benefit, will provide coverage for certain medical expenses such as hospital costs, doctor visits and prescription medication. A doctor must be seen while traveling in order to verify the claim and medical expense benefits. Please consult your policy for more detailed information.

You should always review your Policy of Insurance for additional information about benefits, limitations and exclusions. Note that nothing in these FAQs represents or is intended to represent a guarantee or denial of coverage, or coverage determination, under the Travel Guard insurance policies and we encourage you to file any claim related to Coronavirus you may have under your policy. All information submitted will be reviewed, and your claim will be handled in accordance with the terms and conditions of your policy. If you have any additional questions, please call your AIG Travel sales rep.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring developments around an outbreak caused by a coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Chinese authorities identified the new coronavirus, which has resulted in hundreds of confirmed cases in China, including cases outside Wuhan City, with additional cases being identified in a growing number of countries internationally.

This outbreak has affected travel, forcing many travelers going through China to undergo mandatory screening when entering other countries, and has left travelers with planned trips to China concerned about their visit. It is important for all travelers to understand their travel insurance coverage. This includes travelers with planned trips to China as well as travelers who may be susceptible to contracting the virus.

Below are a few examples of how Arch RoamRight’s plans may work during the Coronavirus outbreak. For full details, please call our customer service team at 1-800-699-3845.

Coverage Options for Trips to China

If you have a planned trip to China and want to cancel because of the coronavirus, you likely will not have coverage through most travel insurance policies. Cancellation due to the fear of contracting a virus is not covered under most Arch RoamRight plans. We encourage you to first contact your travel supplier directly to determine alternate options and arrangements.

Federal health officials have confirmed several cases in the United States. It is therefore useful to understand that, if you already have a trip insured and contract this virus (or any other unexpected illness) before you leave, you likely have coverage to cancel your trip.

Quarantine Coverage

If you or your traveling companion is quarantined, including if you have been detained during your trip due to suspected illness, such as a wellness check at an airport, you may have trip cancellation coverage.

If your destination is placed under quarantine after your departure date, you may have trip delay or missed connection benefits.

Cancelled Flights

For cancelled flights, you may have coverage under most Arch RoamRight travel insurance plans, if the cancellation occurs on or after the scheduled departure date and you won’t be able to reach your destination before 50% of your trip has passed. If the flight cancellation occurs prior to the scheduled departure date, coverage is not available.

Itinerary Changes

If a travel supplier changes a trip itinerary after the scheduled departure date, and that change results in you not being able to participate in a non-refundable, prepaid event or activity, there would be coverage for those expenses, provided that:

  1. The event was prepaid prior to departure;
  2. The event was scheduled on the trip itinerary; and
  3. No comparable event or activity of equivalent cost was rescheduled during the trip.

Emergency Medical Coverage for Insured Travelers in China

If you travel to China and have an Arch RoamRight travel insurance plan in place, you may be eligible for emergency medical coverage if you contract the coronavirus while in China. This includes help finding a physician, emergency medical care, and – if necessary – an evacuation back home for care and treatment.

Travelers, such as those covered by Arch RoamRight, who are abroad and are feeling ill can contact their insurance company’s emergency assistance provider. Arch RoamRight’s emergency assistance provider can by collect call at +1-443-279-7335.

Trip Interruption Coverage for Sick Travelers

Sick travelers may also be eligible for trip interruption coverage, which can reimburse for additional transportation expenses to take you home, as well as any unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.

  • TC/TI Trigger: “a cancellation of your Trip if Your arrival on the Trip is delayed and causes You to lose 50% or more of the scheduled Trip duration due to the reasons covered under the Trip Delay Benefit”

o   If the flight is cancelled prior to the scheduled departure date, there is no coverage

  • If an airline cancels the flight before the scheduled departure date, there is no coverage because the cancellation occurs prior to the Trip Delay/Missed Connection coverage effective date

Itinerary Change

  • If the travel supplier makes a change in the trip itinerary after the scheduled departure date which prevents participation in a prepaid event or activity (i.e. visit the Great Wall), there would be reimbursement for the unused, non-refundable event or activity expenses, provided the event was prepaid prior to departure, scheduled on the trip itinerary and no comparable event or activity of equivalent cost was rescheduled during the trip

[qode_accordion style=”toggle”][qode_accordion_tab title=”Travel Insured”]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring developments with the Coronavirus. The outbreak of the Coronavirus was first reported on December 31, 2019 in Wuhan.

Countries in the affected regions, and areas with reported incidents, continue to be eligible destinations. Should travelers become ill with the Coronavirus while traveling, coverage may be available for Emergency Medical, Medical Evacuation, or Trip Interruption.

Travel Insured previously advised that there would be no coverage under our plans due to the coronavirus, except for CFAR and IFAR.  It remains true that the State Department’s decision to issue a travel advisory of level 4 for China, or any other country, does not trigger coverage, nor does a fear to travel due to the virus.  However, it has come to our attention that the coronavirus may be causing individuals to be quarantined and flights to be delayed.  With this in mind there may be coverage including Trip Cancellation if a common carrier delay causes an insured to miss more than 50% of his or her trip.  The coverages that could be implicated beyond CFAR and IFAR include the following:

Travel Delay – An insured traveler must be delayed for the time sensitive period while en route to, from, or during a trip due to a covered reason.

Missed Connection – If a delay causes you to miss a cruise or tour departure due to a covered reason, you may have coverage under Missed Connection.  The delay must meet the time sensitive criteria listed in your plan.

The delay of a common carrier can be included as one of the covered reasons for Missed Connection. Thus, if a common carrier delay causes an insured to miss more than 50% of his or her trip, Trip Cancellation or Interruption coverage could apply.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption – An insured traveler must cancel or interrupt their trip due to a covered reason.  One covered reason for Trip Cancellation or Interruption that could apply is quarantine.  Another covered reason is if your arrival on the trip is delayed and causes you to lose 50% or more of your scheduled Trip duration, due to the reasons covered under the Missed Connection Benefit.

If your travel supplier cancels your trip, the Trip Cancellation benefit may pay for the reissue fee charged by the airline for the tickets. You must have insured the entire cost of your trip including the airfare cost.

Cancel for Any Reason – Some travelers may prefer to cancel their trip out of concern for the Coronavirus. For insured travelers who purchased Cancel for Any Reason coverage, we remind you that cancellations must be made 48 or more hours prior to scheduled departure and payment is limited to 75% of the non-refundable trip cost up to the stated plan maximum limit. (For residents of New York State: Despite the information circulating about Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage for residents of New York State, we have yet to receive the go-ahead from the New York State Insurance Department. If this is approved, it may take several weeks to implement this plan to be available for purchase. Thank you for your patience, and we will continue to monitor the situation.)

Future Travel Credits – Due to the unique circumstances surrounding COVID-19, we are allowing all insured travelers whose trips have been affected by the virus to change the travel dates on their plan to cover a new or rescheduled trip (provided you are no longer taking the impacted trip due to COVID-19).  We will allow a traveler who has insurance and receives a  Future Travel Credit to use the value of that Future Travel Credit towards the trip cost.  Additionally we will allow a traveler who has been issued a Future Travel Credit due to cancellation for COVID-19, who did not previously have insurance, to purchase coverage and use the value of the Future Travel Credit towards the trip cost.

Every Travel Insured plan also includes Non-Insurance Emergency Travel Assistance Services available 24/7 to help travelers whenever they are in need of assistance during their trip.

This statement only provides a general summary. Please refer to your actual plan document for the specific terms and conditions of the specific plan purchased as eligibility for coverage varies based upon the specific plan terms, conditions and limitations, and may vary by state or may not be available in all states. Travel Insured recommends travelers purchase proper travel protection plans in case of unforeseen circumstances and to know where to go and where not to go during their travels.

Travelex understands that travelers continue to have questions regarding the spread of the coronavirus and what Travelex protection plans cover.

To clarify how Travelex plans provide coverage, the outbreak of the coronavirus, now known as COVID-19, became a foreseeable event for Travelex Insurance plans underwritten by Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance on January 21, 2020. The explanation below regarding the coverage of Travelex plans applies to all travel destinations, not just China and surrounding countries.

Plan coverage purchased prior to January 21, 2020
You would need to have purchased your Travelex plan prior to January 21, 2020, to be eligible for Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption. The insured traveler or traveling companion would need to be physically quarantined themselves in order to cancel or interrupt their trip.

An insured is also eligible for Emergency Medical/Evacuation coverage if the insured contracts the coronavirus while traveling.

Plan coverage purchased on January 21, 2020 or later
An insured is eligible for Emergency Medical/Evacuation coverage if they contracted the virus on their trip. They are not eligible for Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption coverage if the effective date of their plan is January 21, 2020 or later.

It is important to note that fear of travel, travel advisories and destination being inaccessible due to this illness are not covered risks under the Travelex Insurance plans.
